Where is a good neighborhood to live in near Hayward, CA?

I am moving out to the Hayward area to attend chiropractic school in a little less than a year. I have heard that Hayward is not the nicest area to live in, so I am trying to find an area with less crime rates/better apartments. Does anyone know of a better area to live in around there? Thanks.
