A question about Nabokov...?

I seem to remember Nabokov being for team Kazakhstan... I think this was in an NHL game a fair number of years ago. Obviously he is not playing for them come the Olympics. I was just wondering if this is true. Also, where was he born? Any details you have about this would be greatly appreciated.
